SIGHT SEEING BIKANER
Often overlooked, Bikaner has several
attractions, perhaps greatest of which are the medieval
city-centre alleys where camel carts, still in daily use,
add to the atmosphere. There are several major sights, including
the splendid Junargarh Fort, dating back to the 16th century,
which shelters a number of palaces, beautifully decorated
with carving, marble, mirror work, glass and gold leaf.
Thirty-three kilometres south of the city is the Karni Mata,
known as the ' Rat Palace ', an extraordinary 17th century
temple where rats and mice are fed and revered as the reincarnation
of saints. Bikaner makes a good stopping off point between
Jaipur, the Shekhavati region and Jaisalmer or Jodhpur .
