DRIVE TO JAISALMER
ABOUT 6 HOURS
The most westerly city in Rajasthan,
Jaisalmer developed as a trading post on the spice route.
As you approach across the Thar Desert , it rises up like
a mirage, protected by walls and turrets. The tranquil town
centre is reached by a huge stone walkway guarded by a series
of enormous gateways. The dry climate has preserved the
stonework to perfection, and the havelis, temples and palace
retain a quality that transcends time. Nearby Sam Sand Dunes
is a popular destination for camel treks, best taken in
the evening as the sun sets over this remote region. |

GADISAR
TANK
This tank outside the city walls, once
held the town's water supply, and, befitting its importance
in providing precious water to the inhabitants of this arid
city, is surrounded by small temples and shrines. A wide variety
of waterfowl flock here in winter. The tank was built by Maharaja
Gadsi Singh, taking the advantage of a natural declivity that
already retained some water. |

FORT RAJWADA Looking
over the fortress of Jaisalmer lies a six acre legacy of royal
interiors and gardens called Fort Rajwada. Original balconies
with intricate carvings and jalis as old as 450 years adorn
the walls of the grand lobby of Fort Rajwada, is a true example
of heritage preserved complemented by some of the finest conveniences
of 21st century. The princely home has an interior décor,
created by the genius of renowned opera set designer, Ms.
Stephanie Engel.
