DRIVE TO JODHPUR ABOUT 6
HOURS
Dominated by the majestic Meherangarh
Fort, Jodhpur is an interesting town with a very local feel.
First stop is the fort, constructed on a cliff top 37 metres
high with walls up to 36 metres thick. Ascending the long
ramp to the top, visitors pass through a number of stone
gateways before reaching the main buildings. Despite its
grand scale, the walls and windows are covered with detailed
stone carvings. Take time to enjoy the view of the town
below with its blue painted houses, where the walled old
city protects markets where local crafts include leatherwork
and puppet making, scented by the smell of spices that drift
through the bazaar. To see the rural side of Rajasthan,
you can take a jeep safari to visit local villages inhabited
by the Bishnoi tribes. They are predominantly farming people
but potters and weavers will also show you their trades.
